First aid training for staff
Staff who enrol in a first aid course and have their fees paid for by the University are expected to nominate and act as a University First Aider.
The role of a University First Aider is outlined in the First Aid Services Procedure, which states:
- University First Aiders are responsible for:
- complying with the relevant provisions of the Incident and Emergency Management Procedure;
- reporting to their Dean/Director, or to the Head - Health, Safety and Wellbeing, any condition that may prevent them from performing their first aider duties properly and safely;
- attending the training sessions organised for the maintenance and development of their first aid skills;
- regularly (e.g. monthly) checking the contents and condition of first aid kits in their area and ordering first aid stocks as required, using the First Aid Order Form;
- entering into a Hepatitis B prevention program which may, after proper information and consent, include vaccination; and
- providing documentary evidence of their first aid qualifications upon request.
Appropriate courses provided in-house, and recognised by the University, include:
Provide First Aid (1 day face-to-face with pre-work required) - HLTAID011
Certificate valid for 3 years as long as annual CPR updates are completed.
Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (3 hrs) - HLTAID009
Must be completed annually to ensure the First Aid certificate remains valid.
First Aid Refresher (1 day)
Prerequisites: a current First Aid qualification obtained within the last 3 years, plus a current CPR update attained within the last 12 months.
Advanced Resuscitation

In-house training dates
Registered University First Aiders will be advised when dates for in-house courses have been arranged. If places are still available after First Aiders have registered, a FedNews item will advise other staff that vacancies for in-house training exist.
If you are a First Aider and not on our register, please complete a Nomination Form and log a job through Workday, (go to Help, Create Case, OHS Enquiry) including the fully completed Nomination Form and a copy of your current certificate.
Suggested external providers
If in-house dates don't suit, staff can enrol with an external provider. Course fees may be covered by the School/Department.
