Graduate Certificate in Education (Tertiary Education)

The Graduate Certificate in Education (Tertiary Education) (GCETE) is a postgraduate course (AQF 8). This course is suited to academic teaching staff, professional staff working directly within a tertiary learning and teaching capacity (for example, librarians, learning designers, learning skills advisers), and those looking to move into higher education teaching. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with contemporary learning and teaching practices to complement the industry and/or research expertise they bring to the higher education setting.

The course content provides a foundation on which to develop quality pedagogies, in a range of tertiary teaching environments, supported by evidence, research and scholarly practice. Learning activities and assessments support the creation of contemporary and relevant learning and teaching practices for use in current and future units. Examples include: course design, assessment, online and blended learning, student engagement, learning partnerships, academic pathways, and the scholarship of learning and teaching. Participants will be encouraged and supported to relate their learning directly to their workplace and areas of specialty.

Target group: Anyone with a bachelor's degree or equivalent, currently or wanting to teach in the tertiary education sector

Course entry: This is an postgraduate award course that requires participants to enrol as a student of the university. The course is available to domestic applicants only.  Program code: TK4

Staff Study Scholarships: A staff study scholarship is available to eligible Federation University employees to cover 100% of course tuition fees. Scholarships are awarded to eligible staff members, for an individual semester of study. Staff must reapply for each semester of study they undertake within the GCETE. Unit outlines

Each Unit is modularised, combining diverse and interactive online learning materials, with collegial communicative activities to enable participants to shape their learning to suit their learning contexts and teaching settings. Click each of the headings below for a summary of details:

Offered:  Semester 1 (March – July) and Semester 2 (July - December)

Delivery mode: Fully online – 15 credit points

Modules: This unit is delivered as three modules, each facilitated within a five week teaching period

  • Module A: Tertiary learning and teaching paradigms and constructive alignment
  • Module B: Dynamics of learning and assessment
  • Module C: Dynamics of teaching and enhancing practice through review

Time allocation: Total 150 hours of learning | 50 hours per module = 10 hours per week over five weeks

Offered:  Semester 1 (March - July)

Prerequisite: EDGCT5007

Delivery mode: Fully online – 15 credit points

Modules: This unit is delivered as three modules, each facilitated within a five week teaching period

  • Module D: Online and blended learning and teaching
  • Module E; Industry and students as partners
  • Module F: Curriculum design and development

Time allocation: Total 150 hours of learning | 50 hours per module = 10 hours per week over five weeks

Offered:  Semester 2 (July - December)

Prerequisite: EDGCT5007

Delivery mode: Fully online – 15 credit points

Modules: This unit is delivered as three modules, each facilitated within a five week teaching period

  • Module K: Student engagement, retention, diversity and equity
  • Module L: High impact teaching and assessment practices
  • Module M: The academic role and career progression

Time allocation: Total 150 hours of learning | 50 hours per module = 10 hours per week over five weeks

Offered: Semester 1 (March – July) and Semester 2 (July - December)

Prerequisite: EDGCT5008 & EDGCT5009

Delivery mode: Fully online – 15 credit points

Modules: This unit is delivered as three modules, each facilitated within a five week period

  • Module X: Introduction to scholarship of learning and teaching (SoLT) and use in practice
  • Module Y: Exploring SoLT streams and SoLT based investigations
  • Module Z: Disseminating SoLT findings as a tertiary teacher-researcher-practitioner

Time allocation: 150 hours of learning |  50 hours per module = 10 hours per week over five weeks
