Academic Induction Program
The Academic Induction Program (AIP) is a formalised support for higher education teaching staff new, or returning, to Federation University. All staff, whether sessional, contract or ongoing, are expected to complete this program within their probation period.
Academic staff are provided with an introduction to:
- general and specific Federation University learning and teaching practices
- learning technologies to support university learning and teaching initiatives
- support networks available for academic wellbeing and enhancing learning and teaching practices
- support networks available to aid student retention and learning success
- Target group: Mandated for all new, or returning, university teaching staff as per the Academic Probation Procedure (HR955) or teaching support staff. Completion preferable within the first semester of employment.
- Location: Workshops offered online at least once a semester.
- Time allocation: Up to 10 hours, depending on relevant stream.
- Facilitators: Learning and Teaching staff, Library, LASS, and department staff
- Cost: Nil. Sessional staff will be paid to attend at the ‘Other Required Academic Activity’ rate, on completion of the program, pending available funds.
The Academic Induction Program is offered in a fully online mode. For the best learning experience, the online learning modules should be completed before attendance at the workshop, although this is not imperative.
The AIP is divided into a core program and three different streams:
- Core: all teaching staff commencing at Federation University complete the core program.
- New academics: this stream is completed by academic staff commencing their first teaching role, in addition to the core program.
- Sessional tutors: this stream is completed by sessional teaching staff who are commencing their first tutoring role, in addition to the core program.
- Sessional markers: this stream is completed by sessional marking staff who are commencing their first marking role, in addition to the core program.
All new teaching staff must complete the core program, and then the appropriate stream if relevant.
Academic staff with previous teaching experience, but new to Federation, are welcome to complete modules in the ‘New academics’ stream as a refresher.
Each program/stream contains a series of online self-paced modules and virtual workshops.
Enrol via Workday in the core program and relevant stream to complete the modules and register for the upcoming workshops.
