Welcome to Paramedicine

Explore the latest in paramedic practice. Take your current knowledge and experience in healthcare and learn how to provide high-level patient care in the pre-hospital environment.

You will be taught by current practitioners, including ALS and MICA paramedics, so you’ll be  learning the latest, evidence based practices. We’re all about getting you ‘job-ready’ by the time you graduate. You will be eligible to apply many different paramedic roles including a state or territory based ambulance service or patient transport position.

This course is currently only offered as a full-time position with 100% attendance required during the on-campus blocks.

You might need to start uni earlier than the standard Federation semester to fit in your clinical placement.

Key dates for 2025 are:

On campus blocks:

  • Semester 1:
    • Feb: 3 to 7 and 10 to 14
    • April: 28 to 30
    • May: 1 to 2
  • Semester 2:
    • July: 14 to 18 and 21 to 25
    • Sept: 15 to 19

Placement

Clinical placement gives you a chance to apply your knowledge in real situations – which is the best way to prepare for the workforce. You must complete 160 hours with Ambulance Victoria, which works out to be about 8 shifts per semester.

Your emotional wellbeing is our priority. We’ll share your contact details with Ambulance Victoria peer support, and you can also access the free Federation counselling service.

You’ll use the InPlace platform to submit your placement preferences and find out where you’ve been placed.

Things to do before placement

Before placement, you'll need to tick off the following. Some items can take 6–12 weeks, so don't leave this until the last minute.

  • Medical Assessment and Physical Capacity Test. You’ll get all the details in your offer letter. The cost is around $700.
  • Vaccinate against Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Influenza, Pertussis, COVID 19 (minimum 3 doses). These are all mandatory.
  • Mask Fit Testing
  • Police Check
  • Working with Children Check
