Biography

I am a senior lecturer and researcher in the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability at Federation University Australia. I teach principally to second and third level science students in the areas of molecular biology, cellular communication and occupational health and safety. I also lecture to nursing and medical students on basic endocrine function, cancer and haematopoiesis.

My research is focussed on understanding the interactions between human host cells and the intestinal parasite Giardia Duodenalis at the molecular level. These investigations are designed to uncover molecular targets for drug treatment to reduce the prevalence and duration of parasitism.

I am also engaged in research investigating microbial community dynamics in waste water treatment. This research uses molecular techniques to understand the complex interplay of microbial species in the complex environment of industrial and domestic waste water treatment. This work is applied to the anaerobic digestion of dairy waste and algae, as well as the investigation of microbial community succession in bio-composting industrial solids.

I am currently the health and safety representative for the School and a member of the Health and Safety Implementation Team.
