Anyone can learn to lead
We know that taking on a student leadership role can seem daunting. Especially if you’ve never done it before. But the truth is – anyone can learn to be a leader.
The Emerging Leaders Program is designed to help you develop the skills and confidence you need to apply for a student leadership position at Federation. We’ll also recognise and reward you for your participation.
How does it work?
There are three parts to the program, and everything you do earns points.

10 points for each module
More training and development opportunities will be added throughout the year.
Apply your skills and knowledge by taking on one or more leadership roles at Federation (see the full list below). We’ll also invite you to attend the Student Leadership Symposium and regular academic mixer networking events.
Value:
30 points for each volunteer position (per semester)
20 points for each paid position (per semester)
30 points for attending the Student Leadership Symposium
10 points for attending an academic mixer

Recognition and reward
Every time you earn 40 points for training, 50 points for work and 10 points for reflection (100 points total), you’ll complete one level of the program and receive a certificate. This will be added to your eQuals and presented to you in person at the annual FedAwards ceremony.
We expect most Emerging Leadership Program participants to complete one level per year of study, but there are no deadlines, so you can earn points at your own pace.
Student leadership positions
Need help with your application? Send a draft (in Word) to the Careers & Employability team via edge@federation.edu.au (and include your name and student number).
Help with set up and run activities, cook BBQs, give directions and talk to students at Orientation and other on-campus events.
If you’d like to start a new student group at Federation, submit an expression of interest form.
Help students navigate life on res by providing general guidance, organising activities, enforcing housing policies and working to resolve any issues.
Become a member of the Academic Board, Learning and Teaching Quality Committee (LTQC), Research Committee or Student Equity and Inclusion Network to advocate for students on issues related to university initiatives and processes.
Join the Student Senate to give a voice to students, raise feedback with staff, propose changes and help make Federation University a better place.

Answer students’ study-related questions (on campus and online) and get involved in other projects. You need at least a 6.0 Grade Point Average to apply.
Share your uni experiences and advice with high school students, school leavers, mature age students, parents and teachers.
Run weekly first-year group study sessions for a unit that you got at least a 6.0 Grade Point Average for. You’ll work around 5.5 hours per week.
Submit an expression of interest to be considered for a range of casual on-campus positions (like admin support or event coordination).
Help set up and run sporting activities, or captain (or manage) one of our local campus or Fed Falcons teams.
