The Essentials
Step 3: Where will you live?
Are you planning to move closer to uni? If you’re studying on campus, living close by will be most convenient.
Living on campus
Fedliving has a range of room options available. The accommodation is safe and secure, and your bills are included in the weekly fee.
Renting privately
We can offer you advice, but if you want to rent privately, you’ll need to arrange it yourself. You should also be aware of your rights as a tenant.
Step 4: Getting Connected
Start off smoothly by tackling the tech stuff.
First up, get to know your student number—don’t sweat it, you’ll have it memorized in no time. This 8-digit code, along with your student email and password, is your golden ticket to all Federation systems. You can find it on your Letter of Offer.
IT requirements
To study at Federation, you’ll need:
- a desktop or laptop computer running Windows 10 or later, or Mac OS X10.14 Mojave or later
- Firefox, Safari, Chrome or Edge (Internet Explorer is NOT supported)
- a webcam and headset
- Office365 (which you can download for free)
- Microsoft Teams app (which you can download for free)
- a reliable, high-speed broadband internet connection.
No laptop? Book a computer or borrow a laptop from the Library.
Step 5: Moodle - your all-in-one online study resource
Log in with your student ID and password to find learning materials, assignments, class forums and links to academic supports and student services.
The Orientation Hub also lives in Moodle. It's an online resource designed to help you settle in and feel confident about starting university. You’ll find heaps of useful info, tips, videos, links to student services and interactive Q&A forums.
Compulsory modules
As a new student, you’ll need to complete a number of important online training modules. You’ll learn how to stay within the rules academically and how to help make sure Federation is a safe and inclusive place for everyone.
Step 6: Fed systems
At Federation, we’ve got a bunch of systems to help you get the most out of uni. Each one serves a different purpose—you might need some now, or maybe later in your degree. Once you’re connected to Fed, they’re all yours to check out.
Step 7: Know who can help
Asking for help is not just okay, it's the key to learning and thriving. Which is, after all, the whole point of university.
From time to time we will reach out via SMS. Save these numbers 1800 333 864 and 0481 076 216 so you know when it’s us calling.
Step 8: Get matched with a peer mentor
You know what makes starting uni less daunting? Help from someone who's been in that position before and knows exactly how you're feeling.
Sign up for our Peer Mentor program to match with a Fed student who will help you settle in for the first month of semester.
Step 9: Scholarships - Take the financial pressure off
Don’t forget to check your eligibility for scholarships.
Log into the scholarships webpage with your student ID and password, then select 'View Programs' to see the what’s available. You can even add extra details under 'Eligibility Check' to get a personalised list.
Step 10: Preparing for study
Manage your timetable
Use mySchedule, our timetabling system, to manage your class selection. As soon as you’ve enrolled, you can submit your preferred class times for the upcoming semester then adjust your timetable before classes begin.
Each year we provide a wall planner to assist you in your studies. The wall planner is available as both a PDF and a hard copy.
