History of Flecknoe

Located on the historic SMB campus, the Flecknoe building reflects Ballarat’s transformation from a gold rush boomtown into a hub of skilled trades and learning. Originally constructed in the 1930s and 40s as metalworking workshops, it supported the region’s industrial workforce during a time when Ballarat was diversifying beyond mining.

The building name honors Kenneth J. Flecknoe, a prominent figure in Ballarat’s educational and media landscape. He served as president of the Ballarat School of Mines Council during a period of major growth and development.
