Areas of expertise
Neurorehabilitation:
Associate Professor Maryam Zoghi is a distinguished researcher renowned for her extensive expertise in neurorehabilitation. Her work is dedicated to pioneering innovative strategies aimed at enhancing recovery and functional outcomes for individuals grappling with neurological conditions. Dr. Zoghi's research spans a broad spectrum of neurological disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy. Through her investigations, she endeavours to deepen our comprehension of neuroplasticity while devising tailored rehabilitation interventions to optimize patient outcomes.
Non-invasive brain stimulation:
Dr. Zoghi's research encompasses the exploration of non-invasive neuromodulatory brain stimulation techniques, notably transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), as therapeutic interventions. tDCS involves the application of low-intensity electrical currents to modulate cortical excitability, thereby fostering neuroplasticity and facilitating functional recovery in individuals with neurological impairments. By
meticulously refining tDCS protocols, considering factors such as electrode placement, current intensity, and stimulation duration, Dr. Zoghi seeks to maximize therapeutic efficacy and complement traditional rehabilitation strategies. Additionally, her expertise extends to investigating the therapeutic potential of techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), leveraging its diagnostic capabilities and therapeutic benefits in neurological rehabilitation. TMS serves as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, offering insights into cortical excitability and connectivity, thus enhancing our understanding of nervous system function.
Associate Professor Maryam Zoghi's contributions to the fields of brain stimulation and neurological rehabilitation are both profound and extensive. Throughout her academic career, she has mentored nine PhD students and numerous Honours students, guiding them through research endeavours focused on these domains to successful fruition.
