Biography

Trent teaches and coordinates courses within the Bachelor of Community and Human Services, Institute of Education, Arts and Community (IEAC). Trent joined Federation University Australia in 2017. Before teaching at Federation University, Trent has over 17 years or practice experience in case-management, counselling and leadership within the community and human services sector within diverse fields of practice including disability and aged care services, drug and alcohol services, family violence, child youth and family services and mental health. Trent has speciality work experience in working with people with an ABI and dual diagnosis and men’s behaviour change programs. Trent has co-led agency-based research placements focusing life story work and on men’s engagement in perpetrator intervention programs as part of the Gippsland Family Violence Alliance. Trent has also served on the Board of Directors with Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault (GCASA). Trent has close and ongoing connections with a variety of government-funded and not-for-profit human and community service agencies operating in the Gippsland, Melbourne, and Ballarat regions. He is also responsible for sourcing and maintaining relevant industry led student placements for students completing the Bachelor of Community and Human Services and Social Work qualifications.

Areas of expertise

  • Extensive experience in counselling; group facilitation, adult teaching, and case management.
  • Experience in working with people with various disabilities or conditions (including dementia, intellectual & physical disabilities; psychiatric conditions/mental health issues; drug or alcohol dependencies and acquired brain injury).
  • Conducted numerous community education sessions to other community and human service workers and health-professionals across Gippsland; as well as co-facilitating anger management and behaviour change programs for adult and adolescent men; intervention for inhalant use presentations throughout Gippsland; ABI/AOD presentations to various services and professionals; Trauma informed practice and Attachment, Mental Health and Conflict Resolution for young people (Berry Street – Youth Mentoring); Supervision and Reflective Practice training.
  • Extensive experience in leading and managing teams, including the provision of regular clinical supervision, annual performance appraisals, appropriate delegation of tasks and developing positive well-functioning team environments.

    • How we can hold men accountable when the perpetrator is not engaged in the service system?
    • Reviewing existing research into perpetrator typology. Reviewing intervention/treatment strategies used within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
    • Research/review men’s engagement in online family violence programs in Gippsland.
