Six easy steps to becoming a trainee or apprentice
The following six easy steps can assist in gaining a full-time traineeship or apprenticeship.
- Get the person to think about what areas they would like to work in (there are loads of industries that now have traineeships and apprenticeships available) See Prospective apprentices on this site to start them thinking.
- Get the person to update their resume.
- Get the person to visit employers to drop off their resume and discuss if they could be employed as a trainee or an apprentice (most employers these days know the steps in employing you under this program). They can also try:
- Talking to Group Training Australia's local office
- Visiting Local Australian Apprenticeship Centres (AAC's)
- Looking in newspapers for jobs advertised
- Visiting local Job Network Providers
- Get the person to check employment websites for traineeships and apprenticeships that may be available outside our region.
- Get the person to consider doing a VET in Schools course or a pre-apprenticeship program at TAFE to gain some entry level skills
- Tell them to be persistent.
Pathways into full-time apprenticeships
There are various pathways leading to traineeships and apprenticeships. They include:
- Pre-apprenticeship courses
- Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA)
- Structured work placements
- VET in Schools (VETiS)
- Victorian Certificate in Education (VCE)
- Victorian Certificate in Applied Learning (VCAL)
- Work experience
Pre-apprenticeship courses
Pre-apprenticeship courses have been conducted over many years at Federation University Australia (TAFE division). This is a pathway for those students wishing to gain apprenticeships in a particular trade area. The employment take-up after a student has completed one of these programs is very high as employers often ask our teaching staff for potential apprentices to employ in their businesses.
We offer pre-apprenticeship courses in the following industry areas. To enquire call 1800 FED UNI (1800 333 864).
