Distinguished Alumni
The Federation University Alumni Awards have been running since 2014.The Awards formally recognise alumni for their achievements within their chosen field of study and beyond.
The Distinguished Alumni Wall features framed portraits of each Awards recipient and is located outside the 1870 Founders Theatre in the foyer of the Caro Convention Centre, M building at the Mt Helen Campus.

Saeed was an inspirational ambassador to other students, demonstrated through his leadership as President of the Ballarat Arab Society and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Student Ambassador. He was responsible for showcasing the United Arab Emirates on campus and taking the initiative to encourage more UAE students to study at the University.

Mary Aldred

Mary Aldred is passionate about the Gippsland region and its economic and social progress. She has been instrumental in securing state and federal funding for significant projects in the area, particularly through her roles as Directory and Chief Executive Officer for the Committee Gippsland where she provided a united voice for the region. Mary has extensive governance and senior executive experience, sitting on numerous boards and advisory committees. Mary was awarded Australian Financial Review Boss Magazine Young Executive winner in 2018.

Martin is a former Filipino TV media executive, news anchor, radio commentator, podcaster, audio blogger and voice-over artist on national broadcasting network TV5. During his impressive media career, he has been recognised with many awards including TV Broadcaster of the Year. In 2016, he became Secretary of the Presidential Communications Office of the Philippines, acting as presidential spokesperson in press conferences and supervising government news and information agencies.

Arifin is an advocate of lifelong learning. He has made a significant contribution to the higher education and learning sectors in Indonesia and in 2014 was involved in the establishment of the Universitas Pelita Harapan. An avid supporter of holistic learning, Arifin encourages young people to discover which fields of study and future careers align best with their passions, aptitudes and personalities, and to match their passion to their study program. Arifin has authored several textbooks about the Indonesian taxation system, and entrepreneurship, and is a frequent guest speaker on the topics of business, entrepreneurship, and personal development.

Since graduating as a primary school teacher, Shane’s career has taken him all over the world as Executive Vice-President of the Scholastic Corporation and President of the International Group, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books.

Rodney Beach has made an exceptional contribution to the Learning and Development sector. In 2010 he founded Liberate eLearning, a leading provider of digital learning that has helped many of Australia’s largest organisations embrace new ways to provide learning in order for them to stay competitive in an evolving and globally competitive market. Liberate was named a ‘Business of Tomorrow' in the 2018 Westpac Business Awards. Rodney was awarded the 2018 Learning and Development Professional of the Year by the Australian Institute of Training and Development.

Aunty Jennifer Beer is a traditional owner, Aboriginal elder, and passionate education advocate who has been fundamental in the recovery of Wergaia Language in the Wimmera region of Victoria. First graduating from the University of Ballarat in 2001, Jennifer began her career in education, promoting a better understanding of First Nations people, before serving as a member of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council for ten years. Aunty Jennifer is Board Member and language sub-committee Chair of Barengi Gadjin Land Council (BGLC) where she contributed to Land Title claim success in a 2005 Native Title Consent Determination, the first in south-eastern Australia.

Stuart Benjamin’s life experience has been in the representation of regional Australia, with a core drive to advocate for the needs of the people and businesses. Stuart has been Director of the Elmstone Property Group since January 2005, which is an award winning business with proven experience in the development of integrated housing, with a speciality in the supported accommodation space. He has been an active contributor and leader across multiple industries and community sectors for over 30 years, and for the last decade he has dedicated 50% of his time to his volunteer and not for profit contributions for the community.

Sanjay Bharwani is a highly sought-after business leader with experience in transforming large and complex companies across various sectors. He has built an outstanding career in banking and corporate consultancy with roles at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta and major information technology and finance companies including Bank Mandiri, Indonesia’s largest bank. In 2019 Sanjay founded Bester & Co., a business performance improvement consultancy firm. Sanjay is frequently consulted by private sector and government agencies on organisation and digital transformation subjects.

Peter Blackburn

Peter has had an outstanding sporting career as Australia’s number one ranked Badminton player for over a decade. He represented Australia at two Olympic Games and four Commonwealth Games (winning four bronze medals) and competing in five consecutive World Championships. Peter captained the Australian Team for almost ten years and was awarded the Australian Sports Medal and Victorian Olympic Council Award of Merit. Peter is now retired as an athlete and has successfully transferred his sporting success and experience into television broadcast commentary.

Steve Bracks

- Eminent public service to the State of Victoria and to Ballarat
Steve Bracks was the parliamentary representative of the University’s Council from 1995 to 1997, and is one of Victoria’s longest serving Premiers, winning three consecutive elections and achieving record majorities for the Australian Labor party in the 2002 and 2006 elections. He retired as Premier of Victoria in 2007. The University recognised him for his eminent public service to the State of Victoria, and to Ballarat with an Honorary Doctorate in 2007.

Her accomplishments in education have contributed to rural and international communities through Teachers Across Borders Incorporated; as a volunteer teacher in Battambang, Phnom Penh and Cambodia, and working with MacPherson Smith Rural Foundation.

Louis William Gordon Buchner-Malcolm

Louis studied Mine Management and Geology at our SMB campus before going on to study anthropology. He is believed to be the first School of Mines alumnus to complete a PhD, and the first to do so at an overseas university. While serving during World War I he undertook research into the Eghap people of central Cameroon. He published over 30 academic papers and held positions at a number of museums including the Australian Museum, the Bristol Museum as Curator of Archaeology and Ethnology, and the Welcome Historical Medical Museum in London as Conservator and later Director. In 1937 he became Curator of the Homiman Museum in Forest Hill, London, a position he held until his death in 1946.

Jane Burton has close to three decades of public and private sector experience spanning roles in industrial chemistry, research and development, regional economic development and land use planning. Jane is an ardent ambassador for Gippsland and its community. In 2019 Jane was the Victorian Winner of the Minerals Council of Australia’s Exceptional Woman in Resources Award. In 2023, Jane became Project Director, CarbonNet with Invest Victoria. Jane is an ardent ambassador for Gippsland and its community.

Cyril Callister

- Contributions to Australian Food Science and Technology
Cyril Percy Callister, industrial chemist and food technologist studied in Ballarat around 1910. He was working as a laboratory assistant for the Melbourne based Fred Walker Company when he developed one of Australia’s most iconic food spreads – Vegemite. With Sir David Rivett in 1931 he secured the royal charter for the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, becoming President of the Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria in 1935-36. Cyril died on 5 October 1949.

Palaniappan Ramanathan Chettiar

Dr Palaniappan Ramanathan Chettiar (Palan) helps people learn and perform. His drive to elevate the standards of higher education, human resource development, healthcare, and social entrepreneurship and philanthropy in Malaysia has been significant. Palan is on the board of University Malaya; Director of University Malaya Holdings; and Chairman of University Malaya Hospital Specialist Centre. He founded the Palan Foundation to provide scholarships to disadvantaged youth and has been recognised with a British Society of Learning & Development Fellowship, and Malaysia’s second highest civilian honour of Tan Sri. He was also conferred the Datoship title in recognition of his lifelong service and contributions to the community

Robert was instrumental in establishing a number of organisations to assist migrant families with settlement in Melbourne. With a strong advocacy for migrant support services, Robert has served on numerous boards, including the Board of Eastern Health, now the Eastern Health Foundation. He has served tirelessly in Local Government as a Councillor for more than 18 years including two terms as Mayor. Robert has an Order of Australia Medal, the Centenary Medal and is a Member of the Order of Australia.

Benjamin Cole is an international award-winning designer creating cutting-edge apparel and graphic designs. He has designed for world renowned sporting brands and organisations including Adidas, Puma, Ferrari, Mercedes AMG, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool and A.C Milan FC. His work has received worldwide accolades including a FESPA Silver Award Hamburg in 2017. A commitment to finer detail, intricate industry knowledge within both design and manufacturing, and passion for exciting, new design concepts have enabled Ben to use skills learned at Federation University and successfully apply them to the international design world.

Award-winning chef Dallas Cuddy has worked in the world’s most renowned restaurants. Graduating with a Certificate III in Cookery in 1998, he won ‘Best Apprentice’ multiple times then worked quickly through the ranks of the kitchen, before moving to London to work at Michelin Star restaurants. On his return to Australia, Dallas joined Botanical, which won the prestigious ‘Restaurant of the Year’ award. In 2007 he won The Age Good Food Guide ‘Young Chef of the Year’ at Verge, and in 2012 was crowned inaugural ‘Best New Chef 2017’ at Thailand Tatler’s restaurant awards. In 2019 Dallas joined the team of Park Hyatt Shenzen as Executive Chef.

Jacqueline has forged an enormously successful career as a singer in opera and music theatre, gaining accolades both in Australia and overseas, working with some of the world’s major opera houses. Among her accolades are two Helpmann Awards for performing arts, two Green Room Awards for excellence in theatre in Victoria, and an Encore Award for excellence in Ballarat theatre.

Tim is a passionate philanthropist who works closely with community and global influencers to drive conversation and action. He started the Unite Project to fight youth homelessness, founded the Run Australia events across rural communities; initiated a campaign with Beyond Blue to support youth mental health, and has provided thousands of children overseas with access to education and resources through his work with the Cotton On Foundation. In 2013 Tim addressed more than 60,000 people at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City.

Hollywood film director Roger Donaldson was passionate about the arts from an early age and had an ambition to make movies. After abandoning plans for a career in geology, he went on to become one of cinema’s most versatile film directors, a screenplay writer, producer and set designer. He has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and was recognised by the University for his contribution the arts in 2011.

Graeme Drendel is a key Australian figurative painter and printmaker who graduated from Ballarat Teachers College in 1972. He has sustained a full-time artistic career for over forty years building a strong reputation nationally and internationally as a significant contemporary artist. Recognised for his intelligent observations of the human condition, Graeme’s art invites contemplation and reveals the humour of everyday life. Throughout his career Graeme has been a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize on numerous occasions; and been shortlisted for the ‘Rick Amor Self Portrait Prize’; and the Doug Moran National Portraiture Prize amongst others. His work features in numerous collections across Australia.

Barry Dunstan

Barry Dunstan has worked to promote and inspire the Gippsland community through his roles in education, management, and the scientific world. He has a long association with Federation University and considerable experience in consulting and conducting research on a wide range of energy issues. Throughout his career Barry has occupied senior roles including President at the Australian Institute of Energy; Council member and Chairman of Central Gippsland College of Technical and Further Education; and Chairman of the Latrobe Valley Task Force. Barry has been awarded Fellowship of three professional societies: the Australian Institute of Energy; the Royal Australian Chemical Institute; and the Australian Institute of Management.

Ronald Edwards-Pepper is an artist, educator and well-known Indigenous community member in the Gippsland region who graduated with a Bachelor of Visual and Media Arts in 2017. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Australia and overseas with his work in galleries and private collections across the country. Ronald is a proud Gunai Kurnai man and his art tells the stories of his ancestors and aims to teach others about the land they walk on. He promotes his culture and history through workshops, talks and education and by performing ceremonies across Gippsland.

Richard Elkington OAM, is a highly regarded business and Gippsland community person with a long association with the University and region. He is also well recognised for a range of community activities, particularly in the promotion of the Latrobe Valley. In all of his interactions he demonstrates strategic and conceptual thinking and seeks to include as many people as possible in decision making, whether it be with professional or fraternal organisations. The long-time Traralgon resident has been associated with the Freemasons Victoria, since the early 1980s, and in 2022 Richard was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Jan Feder

On discovering ceramics and the expressive potential of clay, Jan Feder immediately knew it was the medium for her. With a particular focus on colourisation or glaze, Jan was respected by her fellow students for her diligence and technical ability. Her death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. A ceramics collection which would benefit future students was decided upon as a fitting tribute to Jan Feder’s life and works and the Jan Feder Memorial Collection was established. The collection now includes the work of over 80 ceramic artists including many international renowned contributors.

Jaz Flowers

Jaz Flowers graduated from the University of Ballarat with a Bachelor of Arts (Musical Theatre) in 2008 and has consistently garnered roles in theatre and stage productions to critical acclaim including a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical and Helpmann Award nominations. She has sung at the State of Origin, the Australian Open grand final and appeared as a contestant on the TV show The Voice. In 2014 Jaz sung on London’s West End and in the BBC production of Kiss Me Kate in The Royal Albert Hall which was televised on Christmas Day. Jaz has built a successful career both nationally and internationally, and runs Jaz Flowers Performing Arts school in Morwell, inspiring young people in regional Victoria to pursue careers in the performing arts.

Rachel has made an impressive contribution to children’s literature as both an author and a teacher and is one of Australia’s favourite authors for young people. She has published numerous picture books and novels which have been translated into various languages, including the I Hate Fridays series and Sacked. Rachel is also an occasional poet and teaches TAFE Professional Writing Programs around Melbourne.

Nikki Foy is a proud and passionate Aboriginal woman and leader who has spent her life ensuring the welfare and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are acknowledged, recognised and improved. She has advocated for indigenous interests on many community and professional boards, committees, reference and working groups including the Federation University Reconciliation Action Group; the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative; the City of Ballarat Koorie Engagement Action Group; and the Local Aboriginal Network. She has been named City of Ballarat Multicultural Ambassador; Mallawalla Community Award winner; and the 2013 NAIDOC Community Education Award. One of Nikki’s most powerful community projects was the inaugural Ballarat Survival Day Dawn Ceremony at Lake Wendouree in 2020

Sae Ra Germaine is an Information Technology professional and passionate advocate for internet and technology accessibility, free and open source initiatives, and the unrestricted sharing of information. She is heavily involved with Linux Australia, the peak body for open source communities in Australia, having served as both Secretary and President. Sae Ra was also Vice- President at Internet Australia, a peak member-based organisation representing all Australian Internet users which promotes development of the internet in Australia to benefit the whole community.

Ann has made a distinguished contribution to education in teaching, research and community engagement, focussing on early and primary Mathematics Education. As part of her PhD, Ann developed an early mathematics intervention program that is used in hundreds of schools across Australia. In partnership with Professor Bob Perry, Ann developed the Let’s Count Program for the Smith Family. Let’s Count is now implemented across Australia.

Ian has a long history with Federation University and its predecessor institutions after graduating with his first degree from Monash University, a Bachelor of Economics, in 1968. He is a valued ambassador for both the University and higher education in Gippsland. Over the past forty years he has actively served his region through various board, committee, and local community organisation roles including as Chairperson, Community Advisory Group on the Star of the South Offshore Wind Project. Ian is an exemplary conduit between community, local government and industry. His sustained leadership and involvement demonstrate his dedication to the region and people.

Murray Gillin

Murray Gillin is celebrated for his work in engineering, innovation, and professional education. Graduating with a Diploma of Metallurgy from the School of Mines, Ballarat, in 1956, Murray spent 25 years with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation. At Swinburne University of Technology he was Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Dean of Engineering. Other notable roles included Director, Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship, founder and chair of Ausentrepreneurs Sans Frontieres; and President of the Institution of Engineers Australia. In 1997 Murray was awarded Member of the Order of Australia and in 2014 he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the ACE International Entrepreneurship Research Exchange.

Deanne Gilson

Deanne Gilson is a proud Wadawurrung woman and award-winning multimedia visual artist. Graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) in 2010, her commitment to her Aboriginal heritage is central to both her art and community engagement, with connectivity to people and Country at the core of her work. Deanne shares her culture through classes, talks and workshops, in particular with the Art Gallery of Ballarat on education programs exploring Wadawurrung history and culture with more than 2,500 students participating to date.

Julia (Bella) Guerin

Bella Guerin was the first woman to graduate from an Australian university when she graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1883. She began teaching at Loreto College in Ballarat before teaching arts and matriculation at the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB) in 1887, becoming the first female principal of SMB Arts and University classes from 1887-1890. Bella was a political activist with a commitment to equity for women. She was Vice-President of the Women’s Political Association from 1912 to 1914 and assisted one of the first women to stand for Federal Parliament, Vida Goldstein, during the 1913 senate election. She wrote and spoke for the Australian Labor Party, Victorian Socialist Party and the Women’s League of Socialists. Bella died in 1923.

Abdel Halabi has made a significant contribution to education and academia but more importantly he is most widely respected for his contribution to the support and advocacy of the Islamic community. Abdel works tirelessly with the local Islamic community, including muslim staff and students at Federation University to foster and enable a vibrant Islamic community. The community has truly benefited from Abdel’s care and dedication he has brought to many. In his volunteering roles and through his partnered community activities including sport and wellbeing, he has made a significant social impact as a champion for inclusivity and opportunities for all.

The Hon. Keith Hamilton’s long and distinguished career has been dedicated to the promotion and pursuit of excellence in education, public service, and service to the community. After teaching for many years Keith took up a career in public office and served as the State Member for Morwell in the Victorian Legislative Assembly for 14 years. Since leaving politics Keith continued his service to the community on boards, committees and taskforces. Keith Hamilton’s leadership, integrity, and compassion in his public positions have led to many innovations and advancements for the community and for the state of Victoria.

Uncle Mick Harding of the Taungurung people, is a cultural activist, educator and artist dedicated to protecting and reinvigorating culture within his community. Drawing inspiration from the legends of his people, Mick has devoted years to developing his woodcraft and drawing skills, learning specialist techniques to create artifacts as his ancestors did with his own individual style. He has been commissioned to create artworks for dignitaries around the globe including a gift from the State of Victoria for the birth of Princess Charlotte; and trophies at the Australian Open Tennis. Mick has served on the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council and as Director and Cultural Ambassador for the Taungurung Land and Waters Council Victoria.

Always at the forefront of creative arts movements she has been involved in the founding and establishment of numerous organisations and events promoting artists’ work including the Horsham Regional Arts Association. Merle has held leadership and board roles at the Public Galleries Association of Victoria; Cultural Tourism Industry Victoria; and various tourism boards around the state. Merle Hathaway has an incomparable enthusiasm, energy and skill for curating and organising arts events and remarkable passion for the arts, with a focus on education and community.

Margaret has been an advocate, teacher, author and academic researcher in the area of gynaecological cancer for 30 years. In 2006 she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her outstanding contributions to fighting the disease by raising millions of dollars to improve cancer wards, and by lobbying politicians and senior medical professionals. Margaret has published several books on cancer research and is on numerous panels and boards which provide direction and assistance to individuals in dealing with cancer.

Christine Johnson is a proud Gunaikurnai woman who, in her role as an Education Engagement Worker with The Smith Family, has directed the Aboriginal Parent and Community Engagement project. The project transitions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from primary to secondary, and from mid-secondary to senior secondary schools, supporting parents in participating in educational support workshops, and improving student attendance. Christine’s commitment to education and her support of Indigenous families to remain engaged around their children's education has achieved positive outcomes for families and the wider community.

Harpreet Singh Kandra is community leader and volunteer passionate about social justice, multiculturalism, health and the environment. He has provided support for those facing food and financial insecurity including the contribution of over 2500 grocery kits and over 5000kg of groceries, as well as providing aid after natural disasters and through environmental work. Harpreet was included on the inaugural Victorian Multicultural Commission’s Honour Roll and recognised as the 2019 Australian of the Year by the Cardinia Shire Council. He has secured millions in funding for projects and been nominated for Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence; the Volunteering Victoria Award; Stan Henwood Award, Gembrook Community Awards; and Cardinia’s Shire Council’s Event of the Year Awards.

She has been a key member of prime ministerial and industry delegations associated with the mining sector and has won numerous business and entrepreneurial awards. Elizabeth was inducted into the Australian Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame in 2000 and named one of the top 20 Names To Know In Mining by the Canadian Institute of Mining.

Dr Omaru Maruatona is an expert in cybersecurity. After completing a PhD in Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) he worked as a technical security analyst and a cybersecurity architect before founding Cyber-AI company, Aiculus, which uses specialised algorithms to intelligently detect sophisticated threats between digital systems. Omaru has successfully led the company to secure pilot customers, investment and expansion into Singapore, and a collaboration with a global bank and government entity. Omaru advocates for diversity in the cybersecurity and technology domains and was a finalist in the Prime Minster’s Prize for Innovation.

Studying games development at University of Ballarat, his final year project saw him lead a team for the highly successful games company Infinite Interactive with their prototype coming runner-up in the prestigious Game Connect Asia Pacific 2008 awards. As a result he gained a foothold in the competitive games development industry and secured work in the USA. Since moving overseas Sam has worked for a range of companies including games industry titans Electronic Arts and NVIDIA. Sam plays a key role in NVIDIAs engagement with the growing field of eSports.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was sent to Australia by her father to study brewing and on her return to India used her skills to develop Biocon into one of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2004 in recognition of her pre-eminent contribution to the field of biotechnology and in 2015, the University named a main road around its Science and Engineering building at Mt Helen in her honour.

Gregory McRae is one of Australia’s most outstanding scientists of the past 40 years and a leading scientist in the USA across academia, corporate enterprise and the defence sectors. Greg has worked at several prestigious institutes including 25 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he was made an Emeritus Professor. Greg’s research stretched beyond chemical engineering and into IT problems, energy issues in generation, storage, transport and CO2 generation. He has received numerous awards including the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and founded four companies that provide services to microelectronic, chemical and operations support industries.

Ballarat marathon runner Steve Moneghetti represented Australia at four Commonwealth Games, winning the complete set of medals, and had three top ten finishes at four Olympic Games. His post career appointments have included Commonwealth Games athletes liaison officer, Mayor of the athletes village and the Australia team’s Chef de Mission. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University in 2001 and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2014 for significant service to athletics and mentor to young athletes.

Ian Nethercote has made major contributions to the Gippsland region and the development of national energy policy and institutions. He has served on numerous energy and policy related national committees, and as Chief Executive of Loy Yang Power was responsible for Victoria's largest power generation facility and the largest open cut mine in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2004 Ian was awarded the Australian Institute of Management Award of Excellence, and in 2010 was awarded the Sir Willis Connolly Memorial Medal for contributions to the Energy Sector and Mining Industry. Ian served on the Federation University Council from 2014 to 2019 and in 2018 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Ian Nethercote is recognised nationally across the political spectrum and the energy industry for his significant input to energy and his keen advocacy for research and development to expand the opportunities for the natural resources of Gippsland.

He then moved to London, working for Price Waterhouse Coopers. He later took a position with Visa Entertainment Solutions in Los Angeles as a Project Manager and in 2016 was appointed President. Leon is a great ambassador of the University and has actively remained involved in events such as mentoring, orientation, marketing and speaking to prospective students.

Ken is a distinguished member of the civil engineering community and has made a substantial contribution to his profession both here and overseas. Through his long and distinguished career in academia, consulting and advocacy, Ken has played a significant part in Australian transport policy, research and education over five decades. His work has received peer recognition from Engineers Australia (Transport Engineering Medal) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (Award for Contribution to the Transportation Profession). He was a member of the Council of the Ballarat University College from 1989 to 1994.

Dr Doris Paton is an accomplished academic and respected Aboriginal Elder with a passion for the advancement of First Nations People through education, and the reclamation and revival of Aboriginal languages across Australia. Speaking Gunai and Monaro Ngarigo languages, Doris has been teaching language for over 20 years. She was Director Vice-Chairperson of the Victorian Aboriginal Languages Corporation, and Chairperson of the Victorian Indigenous Languages Implementation Reference Group, Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority. Her cross-cultural awareness programs have enhanced communication in the community and with groups and services. Her work has been reported in journals and presented at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education. She was appointed to Federation University Council in 2020.

Heather broke down barriers in engineering with an integrity that earned her tremendous respect from within the sector. She was appointed the first female Head of Engineering at the City of Ballarat. She pioneered sustainable design and developed and approved Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) projects, ranging from large scale wetlands projects to innovative water detention systems. The Pitman Benjamin Engineering Prize was founded to recognise students like Heather, who chose not to accept the status quo, but instead to change the world to make it better for all. Heather died in 2005.

Michael Poulton has distinguished himself in the world of high performance sport after lecturing in sports coaching at the University of Ballarat for over 17 years. Michael initiated transformational changes within the Australian Football League (AFL) to reshape coach education. He has created coaching development programs from grassroots through to elite level sports and mentored Olympic track and field coaches leading into the Beijing and London Olympic Games.

Abdul Rasuli is a powerful community builder and a natural leader. He is dedicated to the welfare of the Afghan community and to bringing the Afghan and wider Ballarat communities together for the benefit of both. Abdul helps refugees arriving in Ballarat, finding them accommodation, household goods and transport. He informs them about support networks. He is sensitive to the needs of anyone who is desperate and covers the needs, mindful of the person’s vulnerability and without causing embarrassment. He respects each person’s dignity. He is engaging, inclusive, generous and visionary, providing opportunities for the Ballarat community to make a meaningful contribution and invigorating hope in the lives of Ballarat’s Afghan community.

R W (Dick) RICHARDS

- Significant contributions to the field of science
Dick sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. He spent three years in Antarctica between 1914 and 1917. After returning to Australia, he resumed work at the School of Mines Ballarat as Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics, and developed many pieces of experimental equipment. During World War II he acted as a scientific adviser in the production of optical apparatus in Australia. In 1946 he was appointed Principal and 12 years later he retired after a total of 44 years service. Dick Richards was honoured through the naming of the SMB prize – the RW Richards Medal, which has been awarded annually to a Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. Dick died in 1985.

After graduating, Andrew obtained his first major sporting role as an assistant first coach with Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League. He took up the role of Head Fitness Coach with Port Adelaide, and later moved to the Hawthorn Football Club as a High Performance Manager. Andrew has constantly undertaken professional development to improve his effectiveness, and to this date, has been involved in six AFL premierships.

Leigh Russell is an executive, director and elite sports leader passionate about developing the next generation of female leaders. Working in high performance environments across Australia Leigh was the first woman to hold a senior executive position within an AFL club; the youngest CEO appointed in Netball Victoria’s history and the first woman Chief Executive Officer of Swimming Australia. Leigh is a sought-after speaker and mentor and has co-authored books on leadership, career and wellness skills for women and girls. She is a media commentator and subject expert on topics such as psychology in sport, diversity in sport, leadership and career coaching.

Robert Malachy Serjeant was one of Ballarat’s most successful mine operators and key public figures. He served as Parliament Representative for Ballarat West before turning to mine managing. Serjeant was an active and generous supporter of the School of Mines, Ballarat (SMB) serving on the inaugural school council and holding a council position until retirement when he was elected a Life Governor. He was also a student and mining lecturer at SMB. Serjeant was a community man and had associations with the Freemason, Old Colonist’s Association, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, and Ballarat Local Court and mining board. He was a Life Member of the Ballarat Mechanics Institute and Life Governor of the Ballarat Hospital. Serjeant died in 1902. In 2014 he was inducted into the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame.

As Executive Officer of the Wimmera Southern Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network (WSMLLEN), he has created and implemented a wide range of innovative partnerships, projects and programs to support the education and development of the region’s youth including the MATES mentoring program; the Let’s Read partnership; and the Wimmera South West Virtual School. Under Tim’s leadership, WSMLLEN has won Community Group of the Year; the Connecting Communities Award; the Overall Leading Volunteer Team Award and been a finalist in the Victorian Early Years Awards, the Volunteering Victoria State Awards and the Volunteer Recognition Awards

Jodie Sizer is a Djab Wurrung and Gunditjimara woman and one of Australia’s foremost Indigenous leaders. She is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of PriceWaterhouseCoopers Indigenous Consulting. Through this initiative the world’s largest consulting firm has developed a genuine business partnership with the world’s oldest living culture. Jodie holds leadership roles including Chairperson of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), only the second female Chairperson of the Institute; and at the Collingwood Football Club, where she became the first Aboriginal woman to be appointed to an AFL board. Jodie has been a finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Award; inducted on the Victorian Honour Roll of Women; a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Centenary medal and listed as one of the Australian Financial Review's 100 Women of Influence.

Dennis Spielvogel was known for his energy and passion for community, history, and people. He graduated from the State College of Victoria, Ballarat with a Diploma of Teaching in 1973. Dennis taught throughout Victoria and in Canada and left a lasting impact on the lives of his students and colleagues. He exemplified community spirit and volunteered for almost fifty years. He was a member of the Sovereign Hill Gold Museum Society; the Central Highlands Historical Society; the Heritage Advisory Committee for the Moorabool Shire; the CFA; and the Bungaree Historical Society where he was President for 21 years. In 2007 Dennis was awarded Moorabool Shire’s Citizen of the Year and in 2013 he was awarded the Catherine King Award for Service for his service to Bungaree Primary School. Dennis died in 2020.

Dayle Stevens is an award-winning technology executive who is passionate about making a difference in gender equality in science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM). She co-founded the NAB Women in Technology movement, is Chair of the Board of Robogals Global and an Ambassador at Girl Geek Academy. Dayle has been named in the CIO50 list as one of Australia’s top Chief Information Officers and was named as one of the Australian Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence in 2018. She has won the Australian Computer Society Digital Disruptor Awards twice and also been a finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards twice. Her contribution to the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme was recognised at a meeting with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

David Stratton specialised in computer networking and distributed systems. He maintained a full teaching and research load at the University of Ballarat for 14 years despite having Multiple Sclerosis. He was awarded the University’s first Doctor of Information Technology doctoral degree and led the Distributed Simulation Laboratory and the Virtual Reality and Simulation Laboratory. David remained in touch with research at Federation University throughout his retirement, assisting with the supervision of Honours students and driving research projects. David died in 2019.

John Sullivan is a global automotive engineer who has spent his career designing motor vehicles concentrating on improving their safety performance. Commencing work with the Ford Motor Company in Geelong he rose to the top of Ford globally working in senior roles for many years before moving to Tata Motors, India’s largest car manufacturer. John’s career highlights include designing and delivering the first five-star New Car Assessment Programme NCAP vehicle in Europe; the establishment of new Ford facilities in China and Thailand; and the development of four of Tata Motors’ new global cars. In 2005 John was named in the Engineers Australia magazine’s ‘Australia Top 100 Influential Engineers’ list. Today John runs his own global engineering consultancy company.

Henry is considered one of Australia’s greatest inventors and innovators. He was at the forefront of some of the world’s greatest inventions – the telephone, the light globe, television and wireless telegraphy. At age 14 he became the first documented Australian to experiment with the principles of flight. Decades later he designed and built Australia’s first cars, and the world’s first documented front wheel drive vehicle. Henry died in 1912 but is still known and revered for his profound effect on modern day science, technology and engineering.

Brooke Tahir is truly inspiring. Brooke is from Gunai Kurnai Country and wanted to make a difference in the community and diversity on the Mornington Peninsula. When Brooke created her business The Main Street Greenery, she offered and pledged $1 from each sale to local emergency relief. Brooke also created the Fairy Kingdom using only recycled goods, which has become an ASD friendly space and a perfect all abilities display with a play hub. Brooke has travelled around Melbourne doing various workshops teaching fundamental science to give children and young adults a foundation in STEM as it is so important, and since 2022 Brooke has been tutoring children with all abilities. 99% of her students are on the ASD spectrum or blind.

Neil Terrill was one of the founders of the now Gippsland campus of Federation University, motivated by a strong belief that quality education should be available outside the cities. Neil completed a Diploma of Applied Chemistry at Yallourn Technical College before working as an Industrial Chemist, and teacher. In 1966, he was appointed Head of the Department of Chemistry at Yallourn Technical College which became the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (GIAE). In 1985 he took on the role of Deputy Director of GIAE. Neil also held leadership roles in The Royal Australian Chemical Institute and The Australian Institute of Energy. In 2008 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for Services to Conservation and the Environment of Gippsland.

Toni offers a positive and influential voice to industry, government and skills educators, helping create a thriving and sustainable future for the region. Toni is a great believer in education and training as a key means of accelerating transition and growth in Gippsland and has been an active supporter of Federation University’s education initiatives and activities. Toni’s commitment to mentoring small business owners, particularly women from regional areas is nothing short of inspirational.

Vernon Wall

Vernon Wall has made a significant contribution to community theatre for more than 40 years. His acting career began at Ballarat Teachers College where he graduated in 1973. He has held several positions at the Bendigo Theatre Company, including President, and was made a life member of the company in 2010. Vernon founded the Bendigo Youth Drama Club and Bendigo Short Play Program, and was a major contributor to the establishment of the Ullumbra Theatre. Vernon has been nominated for several musical theatre awards and directed the Music Theatre Guild Awards in 2017.

Jeanette Watson

Jeanette Watson became the first female geology student at the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB) despite resistance from both the faculty and her fellow students. After graduating in 1947 she worked as a metallurgical chemist in Ballarat and Melbourne. In the early 1960s Jeanette taught herself to SCUBA dive and quickly developed a passion for the sport and the marine environment. She became a world authority on the taxonomy and ecology of hydroids (marine invertabrates) leading to a Master degree for research on the marine Hydrozoa. In 1972 Jan formed a marine environmental consultancy providing environmental assessments to industry. Jan has made an extraordinary contribution to marine science both in Australia and internationally and has been a great advocate for the environment.

Marcus Wills won the 2006 Archibald Prize for Portraiture with his work 'The Paul Juraszek Monolith after Marcus Gheeraerts', and was a finalist in the 2015 Archibald Prize with his work, entitled ‘El cabeceo’. The annual Archibald Prize is one of Australia's oldest and best-known visual arts awards.
